Fire Safety For The Home

There are some things that people tend to neglect because they don't seem like pressing issues at the time. Unfortunately, some of those potential problems that seem like they have little chance of actually becoming a reality can actually have disastrous consequences if the proper precautions were not taken. Fire safety is often one of those issues, and while it is not the most appealing topic to discuss, it could very well save the lives of you and your family.

Each year, hundreds of people die in fire-related accidents, many of which would be avoidable if there was a plan to develop a fire route. Every family should have a fire escape plan, which they can develop with a family meeting and ensure that everyone knows what to do if the time ever comes. The plan should take into account the layout of the home, particularly the most-used areas of the home, like the bedrooms, entertainment rooms and kitchen. Look over the furniture and other potential obstructions in each room, make a note of what could potentially impede escape, and then create a route around them. Once the route is decided, make sure to keep it clear of clutter. Make sure everyone is familiar with the route, practicing it a few times. If you have windows on the second floor, it's a good idea to have a ladder installed, providing a quick escape from the upper stories that won't break your ankles. Set a meeting place that's nearby to home where everyone can regroup.

Each year, home sprinkler systems save millions in property damage and prevent injuries and deaths. Water can damage a home, but it's much easier and cheaper to deal with than a home destroyed by fire. They are easily one of the best ways to prevent fires from growing out of control, especially when no one is home at the time. Fire sprinkler systems for homes are less expensive than you might think, simple to have installed in a new home or retrofit into an older one. Fire sprinklers designed for private homes also tend to conform to aesthetic standards, so they won't look unsightly.

Most people enjoy lighting candles. They can create an atmosphere with their light and aroma. However, they are also one of the most common causes of home fires. If you choose to have candles, make sure they are not placed where they can be toppled, but remain visible. They should be out of the reach of children and animals, and the wicks should be cut to about one-fourth of an inch.

Every home should have a fire extinguisher that's easily accessible from any area of the house. With that, small fires can easily be dealt with before they become more serious. Placing one on each floor is a good idea. Hallways in the middle of the house might be a good place, as would the kitchen, where there's more potential for fires from appliances.

Finally, any chemicals that are flammable should be kept away from animals and kids at all times. Make sure the containers are not leaking, and that changes in temperature won't lead to fire hazards.

Proper fire safety takes some time and effort, but implementing the proper precautions is essential to ensuring the safety of your family. It can also result in lowered insurance rates.
