Pests cause ruin for millions of homeowners every year. If you live in any kind of home, you are one day going to have to deal with some kind of pest. The important thing to remember is that you can handle it. Here are some smart ways for you to handle pests.

When the weather gets cool in the fall, outdoor pests will seek out your home as a source of warmth. Specifically bedbugs, bats and mice all will try to get into your home during the colder months. Make sure the exterior of your home is sealed so these pests can't get inside.

Scented laundry powder is a great way to stop ants. Put a container near the entrance they're coming in from, or where you think it might be, and they'll like the scent so much they'll take it back to the colony, killing the queen and ending your problems.

Always make sure that people and pets are properly protected from a pesticide. Pesticides can cause serious harm to living things if precaution is not used. Therefore, make sure that the location you apply the pesticide is free of people, pets, and even toys and and dishes. Be extra careful when using a pesticide near a stream, well, garden, school, or workplace.

Read the labels and directions of any pest-control products you use thoroughly. More is not always better. Misapplication or overuse of certain products can be dangerous to the occupants of your home. In some cases, it is even illegal and can result in fines or jail time behind bars.

If you're having a problem with moths in your clothes, the first step is to find out where they're coming from. Vacuum every inch of space where they're affecting your clothes, including up the walls and on shelves. Move the clothes to a tightly fitting drawer in a cabinet elsewhere.

Fire ants can be a real pest in your backyard! Discovering a fire ant mound in your yard can be dangerous, especially if you have little ones. Purchase some dry ice and place them on top of the fire ant mound. Make sure you are using protective gloves. This negative 110 degree solution can help kill the queen and the rest of those pesky ants.

A variety of garden pests including snails, cutworms and slugs can be kept away by with ingredients from your kitchen. Spread crushed nut shells or eggshells in your garden to keep them away. As an added benefit, adding these ingredients to your garden will help increase the nutrients in your garden.

Pesticides are very efficient but these products are harmful for the environment. If possible, use cleaner methods to get rid of your pest. A lot of home remedies work and there are some efficient products on the market that contain a low amount of chemicals. This is the best approach if you have pets or young children in your home.

Avoid purchasing second-hand furniture or toys. These items might come from a home infested with pest. Cockroaches can easily move from one home to the next by hiding in the cracks of a piece of furniture. If you want to buy second-hand items, take the time to inspect and clean them.

If nothing you are doing is working, call a professional. There are trained professionals that you can use to help get rid of the bugs that are in your house already or prevent new ones from entering your home in the future. This could be the best investment that you ever make for your home.

Throw away all of your upholstered furniture if you find that you have bed bugs. Bed bugs are very disgusting and multiply extremely quickly. Additionally, it can be next to impossible to kill every single one. If you want to be sure that they do not come back you should remove everything from your home that they could be living in.

An easy way to control pests around your home is to always put food in air tight containers. Bugs are attracted all kinds of human food. When you reduce the access to this food by placing in air tight containers, you will reduce the chances of having a pest control problem.

Use rocks around your flower beds instead of organic materials. Organic materials give pests a great home to live in, and once they become overpopulated they will naturally try to make your home their home. Rocks, on the other hand, are not as desirable and can go a long way to prevent you from having a pest problem.

You can keep ants away from the inside of your home using a mixture of sugar and borax. Start by mixing one cup of sugar and one cup of borax into a quart jar. Then, punch some holes in that jar's lid. Sprinkle it near the baseboards inside your house and around the outside. The ants will eat the sugar and the borax will poison them.

Go through the foundation and roof of your house to ensure that there's no cracks or holes that pests can get into. If you find any, make sure you seal them up as soon as possible. Try to avoid using typical caulk as they usually can chew through this. Your best bet is to use something made with copper or mesh.

Nobody wants to be confronted with the nightmare of household pests. However, those who possess a good understanding of how best to deal with them need not worry the next time uninvited guests of this sort appear. Heed the advice listed above and prepare yourself to eradicate even the most stubborn of intruders.
