How To Fix Drywall Cracks Permanently

Drywall cracks are difficult to repair permanently, especially if your foundation is settling. However, you can get rid of this problem easily through several simple steps. If you don't have the time to do so, feel free to contact your local drywall specialist for help.

It is important to gather all the tools and materials needed before proceeding. When carrying out large-scale repairs secure the area and do not allow anyone to enter the room during the process. For those with respiratory conditions, wear a face mask to avoid inhaling dust particles. Protect your furniture from dusting by covering them with plastic sheets or cloth.

You can now tape the crack with a fiberglass mesh tape to get started. Applying a compound over the damaged area without taping it can cause the drywall anytime soon if your house continues to settle. Using self-adhesive mesh tapes are easier compared to tough drywall paper tapes.

Next thing to do is cover the tape pieces using a spackling compound with primer. Do not apply a generous amount to prevent having bubbled and bumpy surface. Spread the spackling evenly to eliminate air pockets that are trapped inside.

Apply the spackling compound from the middle of tape going outwards. This prevents the tape from wrinkling as it dries for half an hour. You may want to go back to one of your household tasks to let the surface dry smooth.

Apply another coating of spackling compound using a wider taping knife. Apply more pressure to the outer edge to feather the panel with your existing drywall. Doing this conceals the repair as if nothing took place. You can apply a third coating of spackling if you are still not satisfied with the panel.

You can directly paint the drywall since the compound already has a primer in it. If you prefer using spray paints, make sure not to hold the nozzle too close to the wall for a natural look. To avoid having brush marks, purchase paint rollers instead of brushes.

These easy steps should prevent the drywall from cracking in the future. You may have to consult a home inspector if your drywall keeps on cracking more often than the usual. Do not hesitate to let the experts handle your drywall concerns for guaranteed results.
