If a playful and comical little lap dog is your ideal companion, you might be interested in French Bulldog puppies for sale. If you live in an apartment or condo, this could be the perfect pet for you. They're also a good pet for the disabled or elderly, as long as you're still able to be a pack leader for a small, but stubborn and tenacious little bulldog.

History of the breed starts in the 1800's. English textile workers favored small bulldogs to serve as ratters. Best guess is that bulldogs were bred with terriers to downsize the breed. When mechanization displaced these workers, many migrated to France. These tenacious little dogs were an instant favorite. Wealthy Americans visiting France also became enamored of this comical, fun loving little dog. Calling them French Bulldogs, they returned to America and quickly established the first breed club.

This comical little dog is curious and playful. With proper socialization and training they are good with strangers, kids, and other dogs. Like their ancestor the bulldog, if the pack leader is passive or inattentive, they can become stubborn and aggressive. A short walk daily practicing heel and other training exercises will keep your pet a calm and submissive family companion.

Acceptable colors are brindle, fawn, tan or white with brindle patches. The skin is soft and loose forming wrinkles at the head and shoulders. The head is large and square. The nose is extremely short and flat, ears are "bat shaped". Weight is 19-28 pounds. Lifespan is 10-12 years. Little grooming is necessary. The wrinkles around the face and neck and under the eyes should be kept clean and dry.

Health and genetic concerns associated with French bulldogs include spinal disorders, joint diseases, heart disease, eye problems. The Canine Eye Registration Foundation screens parent dogs to reduce incidence of eye problems. Many breeders x-ray the parent dogs before breeding to check for potential problems with patellar luxation and spinal disorders.

A dog door is okay but they should never be left in the yard while their human companions go off to work. With their flat noses, French Bulldogs are unable to regulate their body temperature. They can't tolerate extreme temperatures or extreme exercise. They're susceptible to heat stroke so don't walk in the heat of the day. With top heavy, muscular bodies, most can't swim.

Some drool and slobber. Most wheeze and snore. Extra weight adds to respiratory problems. French bulldogs are playful but can't tolerate long walks or hot weather.

Maintain your status as pack leader during short daily walks, games of fetch, and fun training exercises. Include the kids in training exercises so they'll know how to be a pack leader, and your dog will recognize the kids as pack leaders. Females of this breed may want to guard small children.

Look for a breeder who has experience with the breed and membership with a breed club. Ask what genetic testing was done on the parents dogs, and what testing has been done on the French Bulldog puppies for sale. If possible, visit the breeder to meet the parent dogs as well as the puppies. Ask what has been done to socialize the puppies. The buyers contract should include a health guarantee and a buy back policy.
