Designing A Room Perfect For Baby

When you get ready to design your baby's nursery, don't be shy about tailoring the design choices to reflect your tastes. While the nursery is sure to be a bit unlike any other room in the house, it should still flow well with all of your other spaces.

When you first sit down to think about your baby's special room, begin by choosing a color or theme. You can go with traditional blue or pink, and these are always easy hues to coordinate with furnishings, bedding and accessories. Consider using lighter shades of pink or blue in the main with a few spots of darker color to add interest. You might paint the walls light blue but add dark blue stencils of the alphabet all along the ceiling edge.

You can also select a gender non-specific color, such as green or yellow. Another option is to commission an artist to create a mural along one wall. You can select a theme such as fairies or garden flowers or perhaps choose a popular character such as Winnie the Pooh. Another fun way to add interest is by installing wainscoting along the bottom half of the wall or installing a chair rail. On the bottom half of the wall below the rail, use a darker paint color and use a lighter color on top. So you might have a dark green on the bottom and light green on top, for instance.

A baby truly needs only two pieces of furniture in his or her room. This includes a crib and a changing table. The changing table should include shelves or baskets for storing clothing, diapers and wet wipes. Including a rocking chair is also a good idea, but other than that, keeping things simple and clean is best. You can install pretty drapes and a shade, but avoid blinds or anything with a cord, as these can be dangerous for baby.

Your closet should be a picture of organization. Dedicate half of the closet space for clothes and the other half for storage. While the baby might have few toys, games and stuffed animals as a newborn, this will change as the months fly by. Set up some shelves and place some sturdy tubs or baskets on the shelves. You can label them for blocks, books and more, making clean-up a breeze.

If you really cannot decide on a design scheme, it is a great idea to meet with a professional interior designer. They can create a plan and do all the work for you, or you can purchase plans and do the work yourself. Either way, using a designer ensures that you will end up with a polished finished product.
