Being Professional On Social Media

One of the major privacy-related concerns among American is the fear of leaked medical records. While some of us may not think about it, medical records contain some of the most intimate details about a person's life, including physical health, mental health, social behaviors, personal relationships, and even financial status.

Delete the Dirt

No matter where you are on your life journey, whether a high school student, a starving student, a budding professional, or a seasoned veteran of Corporate America, you want to make sure that your social media profiles are free of any debauchery or derelict behaviors. Booze strewn images and scantily clad "selfies" should be deleted if you have them and avoided like the plague if you don't.

One of the most effective ways to prevent a breach of your privacy is to simply think things through. If you happen to be carrying health information with you, make sure you always know where it is and keep it out of sight (in a purse or backpack) when you're not using it. Additionally, only access your medial information for valid reasons like treatment, care, and billing.

Sexual harassment is one of the most common and the most awful forms of harassment. When it takes place in the office, it is not only inappropriate, but also bad form and creates an environment of fear and discomfort.

Once you've cleaned up your Facebook, Tumblr, or Twitter, you want to keep it that way. Each time you post a picture, video, or status update take a moment to review what you are putting on the internet. Nothing is truly private and no matter how hidden you think it may be, you can never be sure and I guarantee that you would much rather be safe than sorry.

For instance, make sure to choose complex passwords and never share them with others. While you may trust the person, you cannot trust their ability to be adequately careful. Also be sure to always log out of your email when you're done using it, and never let others use the computer without your supervision if you are still logged on.

Personal and Professional

For individuals searching for employment in fields where professionalism is tantamount, like the legal or medical professions, it may be wise for you to look for and participate in an industry specific code of conduct training. Doing this will enable you to familiarize yourself with the specific rules of interacting on social media for that industry.

If they were to find medical bills, insurance forms, or even discarded pill bottles, they might be able to put together the clues and figure out a good portion of your medical information. So make sure to discard any materials containing medical information in a way that makes it impossible to read or decipher.
