How To Choose Wheelchair Ramps

It is unfortunate that a lot of places are still not properly wheelchair accessible. In some cases this can be due to planning issues or in other cases it is because people are not aware of issues regarding access. One way to get around this is to purchase your own wheelchair ramps that are suited to your chair.

Part of the problem is that some restrictions may prevent people from making their premises more accessible. This is often the case with older buildings. Therefore it is not possible to make them more accessible without having some kind of ramp available on the premises.

The idea of the ramp is to bridge gaps. Ideally you want something that can go over a couple of steps and to deal with awkward gaps. Often these gaps may be quite small and in some cases it may be possible to cross over them. However you do not want to drop down and damage the wheels.

There is also the issue of carrying a ramp with you. Fortunately there are a number that can be folded. This means that you can transport them easily in your vehicle and have them with you without being too heavy. Telescopic ones are also good because you can then adapt them to various distances.

Therefore you should have your own ramp with you in order to deal with any potential access issues. A telescopic ramp can be used to bridge varying gaps. Sometimes a gap can be small. However you should still bridge it to prevent awkward crossing that can result in damage to the chair. A folding one is good because this is easier to transport and will take up less storage space than one that cannot be folded down.

The kind of material it is made from is also a crucial consideration. Aluminium is often used because it is both light but also durable. Therefore it is not too heavy when you need to transport it but it is also solid enough that it can handle being lifted and shunted down around various places.

There are a number of companies that produce ramps. It helps to look at a range of options. This will allow you to gauge who offers the best quality of products within your individual price range. Remember it is better to invest a bit more in order to get one that is more durable rather than getting a cheaper product that you will end up having to replace multiple times and thereby cancelling out any initial savings by getting a cheaper ramp.

Ideally you should compare products from at least three companies. This will allow you to gauge who offers the best quality of wheelchair ramps as well as the kind of guarantees they offer. It is also advisable to use your regular search engine in order to get customer feedback and reviews to give you a broad range of opinions to help you find the ideal ramp to suit your requirements.
