At one time or another, most of us have suffered some level of back pain. This is a worldwide problem, and in just the United States at this moment, you can find more than 25 million suffering from varying degrees of back pain. We spend billions of dollars each year to reduce the pain, not to mention the cost of lost wages and the reduction of our quality of life. If you are suffering from back pain, consider the following tips to help you lessen the pain and avoid future occurrences of back pain.

Often back pain occurs because our back muscles are weak and we haven't been exercising enough. This also goes hand in hand with weight. When we have too much weight, our back has to work harder to support the body and this can lead to strains. So creating a consistent exercise plan and adjusting to eat a healthier diet can help eliminate back pain simply because the back won't have to work so hard. Still, it's hard to get out there and exercise when you are hurting and you also might be worried about further injuring your back. However, many experts say that a bit of exercise can speed up healing times by increasing circulation and loosening up muscles, so consider an easy low-impact exercise to start out.

Posture also plays a role in lessening back pain. The back is complicated area of our body with many bones, muscles and nerves. It all works better when it's properly aligned and proper posture truly can help. This means standing up straight and holding in your stomach muscles while standing. Weak stomach muscles also can lead to back pain so whenever you think about it, hold in those muscles to keep them strong. When you sit at a desk, sit up straight and insist upon having a chair that supports your lower back. Make sure the chair is at the proper height for your desk and your stature.

Lifting heavy objects is always a risky endeavor for your back, but you can lessen the impact by lifting items correctly. This means you need to use the muscles of your legs, stomach and arms to help you lift rather than simply bending at the waist and lifting an object.

If you are suffering from back pain, you might be tempted to turn to pain killers to ease the discomfort. While this might be appropriate some of the time, it's good to look for pain relief products that are free of medicines. For example the day you hurt your back, rest and apply ice to reduce swelling. Visit your chiropractor or acupuncturist for a treatment or schedule a massage. Another easy drug-free option would be to apply a physiological hybrid shape.

Physiological hybrid shapes often are used by athletes to allow them to continue exercise even with a muscle strain or pain. These specially designed shapes are much easier to use than tape and provide the support of a brace without limiting your mobility. The center of the shape adheres to the sore area, and the arms of the shape reach out to nearby muscles, tendons and ligaments using these body parts as a source of power in place of the sore muscle. This allows you to move around with less pain and in turn increases circulation in the sore area, which speeds up healing. You can wear a shape for up to five days, and they stay in place using a medical-grade, hypoallergenic adhesive.
