La Mesa Home Security Tips: DIY

Many people are afraid of burglaries in their homes, and you may be one of them! But take heart. 90% of burglaries are preventable, and this is good news for you, because this means you can do a lot to protect yourself.

The key is to know what to do to prevent a burglary from happening. One of the best things you can do is to make sure the area around your home is not too dark. If it is dark, a burglar has a good place to hide while he sneaks around your home. Purchase some bright lights and shine them on the outside of your house, especially around the doors and windows.

The plants and decorations around your house is also a way to either invite crime or discourage it. Tall trees, dense plantings and other items make a crooks job easier. He can hide behind the plants or even climb the trees to get access to upper floor windows.

While good locks are important in home security in La Mesa, your locks are sometimes only as effective as your door frames. Weak door frames can be kicked in by a burglar, bypassing the lock altogether. Make sure your door frames are strong and not beginning to rot.

One of the best ways to scare off a crook who is trying to break into your home is to make sure he makes a lot of noise. Putting alarm sensors on all your doors and windows will increase the chances that he will trip these alarms and make a loud noise. This will probably scare him off.

Do you have a dog? If not, consider getting one. Crooks do not like barking dogs. For one reason, they may get bitten! But also, a barking dog lets everyone know that the crook is there. Dogs make great burglar alarms!
