Naples Psychologist Provides Forensic Psychological Examinations To Determine Insanity

Scientific psychological theory and education in the law are necessary for the forensic psychologists in Naples FL. They may work as prosecution or defense witnesses or give advice in jury selection. To work in this field, someone must be an accredited and licensed psychologist who thoroughly understands the nuances of the judicial system.

In most states, the candidate for licensure must hold a doctorate degree. He can qualify for a number of jobs in the field without a license if he holds a master s degree, however. For example, he can be a part of the legal system in a position as a parole officer. He can also participate in research.

Being qualified in the field without understanding the rules of law that are necessary to follow in court, he cannot make a good witness in court. When testifying, there are things he can and cannot say. Saying too much or answering incorrectly makes it possible for the opposing lawyer to ask questions that may be damaging on cross examination.

The forensic psychologist is hired to conduct an evaluation in a case where a defendant wants to plead insanity. Sometimes a defendant can be classified as incompetent to help in his own defense. It is not always necessary to testify to that fact on the witness stand when a judge requests the assessment.

A forensic psychologist profiles individuals involved in the case. This is the personality evaluation that is shown on many television programs. In addition to other qualifications, he will have to understand police procedures and how they apply to the judicial system. Profiling assists the judge when it is time to sentence the guilty defendant.

Conducting any type of research in forensics is an interesting and widely diverse position. This variety of tasks appeals to the individual who enjoys variety. There are some drawbacks, however. Criminals who are insane are not easy to work with and in some cases, are downright dangerous. Another problem is that there are limited schools offering degrees that prepare a candidate to work as one of the licensed forensic psychologists in Naples FL.
