Uncommon Home Security Tips

Having a safe and secure home is part of the American Dream. But unfortunately, that dream can be easily shattered when your home burglarized. For this reason, many families take many measures to ensure that their loved ones and property stay safe from intruders. While home security systems can be an effective measure, this article is going to explain some the more unconventional methods of protecting the home that are available today.

Webcams that you can remotely access are a great way to keep tabs on your place while you're not there. You can set them up to display a live feed of key areas of your house that you can check over the internet with a computer or smartphone. Some people have even installed cameras at the front door that are triggered by the doorbell. When someone rings, the camera snaps a shot and emails or texts it to your phone.

An even less common system is to buy or build a wi-fi controlled robot. They often have wheels and a webcam, and you can access and control them over the internet with a tablet or computer. You can use it to periodically roll around the house and check on everything. Plus, it's just darn cool to have a remote-controlled robot patrol your home.

People all throughout the ages have used trained dogs to guard important areas. This practice is still in use today for the simple reason that dogs are very good at keeping areas secure. Most times, if a burglar observes that a large dog is in a home, they'll move on and look for an easier target. Purchasing a guard dog is not a decision that should be taken lightly, as your family will have to take on the responsibility of caring for a pet and all that it entails. You'll have to train it, feed it, and care for all of its needs. However, if you decide that you're up to the task, a good guard dog can not only be an effective way to protect your home, but can be a good pet for the family.

If you plan on leaving the dog to protect your home while you're away, you'll want to ensure that all its needs will be cared for. It should have access to the yard to go to the bathroom, and to food and water. You can either buy an automatic food and water dispenser (which you could check on with the aforementioned webcams), or have a friend that the dog is familiar with drop in now and then.

Finally, we'll talk about how exterior lighting can be used to discourage thieves. There are certain areas of the home that burglars will target as an entry point. These are usually areas like the rear windows, backdoor and sometimes even the skylight. If you set up exterior lights to shine on these normally vulnerable areas, you can discourage thieves from trying to break in with conditions where neighbors or passersby can see what they're doing. Most outdoor lights are motion-sensitive to conserve energy.
