Is It A Good Idea To Use Winter Tires?

With my trusty truck I moved up to the North East after college. I have grown up in warmer climates so didn't have much idea about driving on snow during the winter. The first winter was extremely bad. The truck lacked a four wheel drive however, I always thought the front wheel drive is ideal to get you through normal situations. The case was not the same in the first winter. I rented an apartment located on the top of a hill before the snow fall started.

It was not a problem to get in and out of the driveway on normal days. But after the snow pack down hard ice and especially when the second snowfall hit, getting out in our drive became a major chore. Coming out was not at all tough if you wanted to stop or steer. But coming up the driveway was a nightmare. I got stuck a number of times. The driveway was like an ice rink due to the ice and slick at the top. At first I took a running start and came up without stopping.I moved up without even getting stuck. But as the winter wore on the top of driveway became more more packed with ice, the trick of getting a running start just make let me clear most the driveway. I would always get stuck just near the garage entrance. I then had to dig the truck to get in at night.

My tires had worn down by the time of spring. The local tire shop offered a huge collection of tires to choose from. Being money conscious, I looked for the best deal on all some season tires. The sales person explained to me that all the season tires were not ideal for driving during the winter months. He suggested that I get a set of a performance tires for my truck driving through the summer and then switch to winter ones in the fall.

I felt at first he was trying to pressure me into buying an extra set of tires. But later I found out that most of the drivers actually opt for two sets of tires. In order to drive on dry roads the performance tires are considered to be the best. The winter tires have special treads that made driving so much easier but could be put easily lose their tread during the hot summer months. Switching back and forth will help you make the best bargain.

No other tire would perform better in winter than a set of Cooper winter tires. You will be able to save a lot of money this way. Two sets of tires would last much longer than a single set that would get stuck in snow and wear down. The shop showed me how to find some tire rebates online to cut the price of the summer tires. I then waited for another rebate to save money on the winter set in the fall. The following year my truck was not a big issue.
